🏁 Bike Shed Festival – Lydden Hill – Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 🏁
Last weekend was the Bike Shed Festival at Lydden Hill in Kent, the 2nd year that the event has run, and was previously called the Café Racer Cup. This is now a major UK event for the Bike Shed and is about giving regular riders the opportunity to race in a less serious fashion and on custom motorcycles and at a lower ability than the regular sport of racing. Having been there, I can totally buy into that, it was so much fun, great atmosphere and the track is really short and super friendly for riders of all levels.
Anyway, it was a bit of a last minute sign up for us and came on the back of our 2020 collection launch in London, so we hot-footed it from London down to Lydden Hill for the day and was lucky enough to blag a ride on the amazing Husqvarna Vitpilen 701. It was the first time I’d ridden the Vitpilen 701 and it turned out to be a great instant match for both me and the track… fantastic usable power and gearing for a short track, great brakes and great handling. In fact so much so that I managed to win a race, 2nd in another and was lapping within a couple of seconds of people who were much more experienced on track than me. With a bit more practice on the Husky Vitpilen and a few track days next year, I’d be pretty confident of breaking into the late 40’s, the bike had loads more the give and I know where I was slow on the Lydden Hill track.
Not that the day was about that, it was about fun, getting involved and just experiencing the thrill of having a go and it was great to be a part of that! Hats off to the BikeShed team for making it happen and thanks to Husqvarna for the bike. And thanks to our Founder and ex-racer Geoff for great tips and support throughout the day, plus April, Gus and Holly. Fingers crossed, we’ll be back next year!
