Back in 2000 a group of researchers at Stanford University launched Folding@home, a distributed computer system that lets people around the world contribute their digital computing power to help solve complex protein folding and mis-folding problems. This monumental effort has lead to significant biomedical results relating to Alzheimer’s disease, Diabetes, Sickle-cell anemia, Type II Diabetes, and much more. But the computational resources needed for this research are not free, and for this reason the network has not scaled to its full potential. To help solve this economic resource issue, Joshua Smith and Max Vorksholk have created CureCoin, a crypto-token system that provides CureCoins as a reward to individuals for contributing their computational resources to the Folding@Home network. These CureCoins can be traded on exchanges and converted to other currencies to provide some financial reward, and thus an economic incentive, for people to contribute their resources to medical research. In this episode Ethan talks with Joshua Smith about the details and history of CureCoin and how it integrates with the Folding@Home network.
