Bike Restoration

Restoring a 40 year old folding bike – this thing has made the rounds through the family, I rode it as a teenager. Lots of rust to fix, I also eliminated some parts such as fenders, generator powered light, & some trim to get the weight down, b/c its pretty heavy for a folder. Frame- 3 coats of Krylon gloss grey over 2 coats of primer, followed by 2 coats of clear. Handlebars, wheels & trim got the same treatment, but with black paint. New parts & materials cost about $65. Labor cost blood, sweat, & beers. When folded, it fits nicely in the back of my Jeep along with my wife’s modern folding bike. Not an authentic restoration, but a fix-up & restyle. This is just a 1-speed, & with the little 20 inch wheels I wouldn’t want to ride it long distances, but it works great if you need something to throw into the back of a car or boat and use for a short hop. Modern fold-up bikes can be inexpensive, but I enjoy bringing the old stuff back to life.
