Triple Peaks Challenge 2018 – Mountain Biking Helmet Camera Video

The Triple Peaks Challenge is an annual mountain biking, running and walking race over three epic peaks near Havelock North every March. It’s been going for 30 years this year.
Revolution Bikes is a major sponsor and we put up a mountain bike as a spot prize every year. This year there were 770 competitors from around New Zealand including 141 solo mountain bikers, and several three person mountain biking teams including a group of guys who did it on their eMTB’s (and may yet be disqualified).
With stunning views, two river crossings, and a distance of 45-57kms (depending on the course) it truly does challenge it’s competitors.
Because of the river crossings the race organisers plan out two courses as the Tukituki River is not safe to cross on foot after heavy rain. So this year it started pouring down a few days before the race, and the river came too high, so the course was changed to Plan B. This means doing the first, (and steepest), mountain twice, (Mt Erin) before heading over to Te Mata Peak and back down into Havelock North Village. It meant the course was shortened by about 10kms too. Many of the riders said this was the hardest mountain biking course they’d ridden due to the steep terrain and the mud.
Most of the riding is over open farmland, and two of the three peaks are private farms which do not allow public access other than for this event.
The riding was filmed by Revolution Bikes Staffer Paul Needham on his helmet cam. Paul finished 14th of the 141 riders and was 4th in his class, an awesome ride and finished in his classic style with a manual (wheelie) over the finish line.
